Planning a Yearly Goal
What do I mean when I say yearly goal?
I’m referring to things like “walking every day for a year” or “reading 100 books in a year“.
It is not something you can decide that you will accomplish within a week or a month. By its very design it is meant to create a good habit or break a bad one.
So how do you go about it?
Well normal practice would be to simply divide 365 days by 100 books which means you have to read a new book every 3.65 days. This would work if life was static and there were emergencies, family situations and whatever that may come up that throws your world into disarray.
What should you then? What I do is add another 10% onto my goal. It means conservatively that 10 of the time I am going to be unable to complete my goal so it allows me a buffer for when the unexpected occurs.
In this case, it would be 365 days divided by 110 books which works out to be 1 book every 3.31 days. I would even take this further and round it down to 3 as then it is easy to formulate a daily goal.
Daily goals are essential in trying to meet a yearly goal. That way you are always chipping away at your bigger goal and if you do fall behind the effect is not as dramatic as if you got behind with a weekly or monthly goal.
So if I want to read 100 books in a year, I know I need to read a third of a book a day, so I use an app or a reminder to remind me to do it and I allocate a period of the day when I will do it. Whether this is the last half hour before bedtime or getting up an hour earlier to make time for it.
It is all about creating new habits and forcing yourself to do something daily with a goal is a great way to get started. If you do fall behind when you do have to catch up it is not as much work to do which is a bonus as well.
